How to Calculate Takt Time

The formula is deceptively simple, but getting the inputs right is critical for accurate OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).

Step 1: Net Available Time

Start with your total shift length and subtract ALL planned downtime (Planned Maintenance, Lunch, Breaks, Team Meetings).

8 hrs - 1 hr break = 7 hrs (420 mins)

Step 2: Customer Demand

How many units must ship by the end of this specific shift to meet the delivery schedule?

Demand = 420 widgets

Step 3: The Calculation

Divide your available minutes by the demand.

420 Minutes ÷ 420 Units = 1 Minute per Unit

Takt vs. Cycle vs. Lead Time

  • Math: 480 mins / 240 loaves = 2 minutes.
  • Result: A new loaf must come out of the oven every 2 minutes. If it takes 3 minutes, you will run out of bread. If it takes 1 minute, you will have stale bread.
